The SWE Counselor is an elected member of the SWE collegiate section and must be a member of SWE.  SWE Counselors act as a liaison between collegiate section, industry, faculty advisor and all levels of SWE.  The SWE counselor coordinates communications and synergies between the college and professional sections, i.e. volunteers, outreach events, professional speaking events, etc. and invite student sections to open South Ohio events. Responsibilities of the SWE Counselor are:

  • To know the SWE rules & bylaws and help others become knowledgeable
  • To coach the collegiate section by providing advice and resources on SWE, speakers, industry, etc
  • To work with faculty advisor to ensure section is in good standing with university
  • To ensure the section is in good standing with SWE HQ
  • To encourage award and scholarship applications and collegiate member participation at regional and national levels
  • To encourage graduating students to transition to professional SWE membership and stay involved

The SWE faculty advisor is the liaison between collegiate section, the College of Engineering and the University and does not have to be a SWE professional member, but it helps tremendously! They serve as an interface between Collegiate members and University rules and policy. Not all Universities require a student organization to have a “Faculty Advisor”. SWE collegiate sections must follow University policy for registered student organizations. Responsibilities of the SWE Faculty Advisor/sponsor are:

  • to be actively engaged in mentoring a collegiate section as a Faculty Advisor,
  • to serve as a link for the collegiate section to the rest of the educational institution
  • to promote the section to the College of Engineering and its faculty
  • to know about available university/college resources
  • to encourage award and scholarship applications and collegiate member participation at regional and national levels
  • to attend and encourage attendance at conferences (free with 4 members attending), assist with University paperwork for travel authorization and funding requirement
  • to encourage graduating students to transition to professional SWE membership and stay involved
